Each year, over a million people walk the East and West piers at Dún Laoghaire. Whether it’s for a quiet walk, family days out, first dates, weddings, hanging out with friends, walking the dog, or just taking in the air, the harbour area undoubtedly counts as one of Ireland’s best-loved visitor attractions.
People from all over the world, including politicians, royals and celebrities, have embarked and disembarked at the ferry terminals and many thousands of Irish people have joined the diaspora from this pier. With its world class regattas, sporting fixtures and festivals of all kinds, it continues to be a hive of activity on many a weekend throughout the year.
Based on dlr LexIcon’s popular People on the Pier social media project which set out to collect images of people and the piers for dlr Local Studies Collection for the important 200th anniversary year, this book is both a history and a joyful celebration from a community that responded with great energy and enthusiasm, sharing their wonderful memories and photos of this unique and much-loved maritime area.
About the Authors
When Betty spent many a busy Saturday cataloguing ephemera and maps for the Local Studies Collection in the old Carnegie Library in Dún Laoghaire, she never envisaged that one day another Librarian at dlr LexIcon might be cataloguing a book with her name on it! Following her career as a Librarian, Betty now works as a freelance content and copywriter and specialises in marketing organisations and businesses in the online world.
