Description

Salisbury was initially unlucky in the provision of railways, but that started to change in 1847 when an extension of the London & Southampton Railway reached it. This prompted the GWR to propose a line 52 miles long from Thingley to Salisbury. The Wilts & Somerset Railway would also have branches to Devizes, Bradford and Frome, with a 'coal' branch to Radstock. Dealing with the Westbury to Salisbury section, the book deals with early proposals, other schemes, the building of the line and so on. This is followed by chapters describing the line, locomotives, accidents, signalling, and permanent way. Finally, there is a chapter on First World War military branches. There are seven appendices. The many illustrations include maps, adverts, photographs, station plans, timetables, etc.
