Independent Scotland is on the up after rejoining the EU, while the English economy has floundered. A buffer zone between the two stretches the length of the Anglo-Scottish border, where the region's troubled past lies buried close to the surface. Southerner Seth has been posted north for his national service; he just needs to keep his head down to get through the next two years. That shouldn't be too difficult when he's stuck in the middle of nowhere. Megan's struggling to keep the family farm afloat by working part-time for border patrol while her stepfather drinks the meagre proceeds. Then her boss offers her a lucrative opportunity. The money could see the farm through another winter but she knows there's bound to be a catch.
