The Life and Work of Inji Efflatoun

The life and work of the Egyptian painter and activist in the women's movement, pioneer of modern Egyptian art. A valuable addition to Barjeel Art Foundation's publications on Arab art, this book sheds new light on Inji Efflatoun's biography. In addition to a number of newly-commissioned essays, the book presents an English translation of a volume originally published in Arabic in 1993 under the title Mudhakirat Inji Efflatoun: Min al-Tufula ila al-Sajn [The Memoir of Inji Efflatoun: From Childhood to Prison]. Based on an interview with the artist-a leading Egyptian feminist, political activist, curator, and visual artist-the book contextualises the political, social, and cultural dimensions of a complex and turbulent period in Egypt's history. - Salwa Mikdadi, Art historian, author and educator
