It traces a "hidden lineage" of women in Kerala's theatre: women who defied social norms when acting on stage was taboo, and often faced ostracism, abuse or social ostracism **x2014; especially during 18th & 19th centuries when women were barred from acting. Their struggle and perseverance, the book argues, paved the way for a new wave in Malayalam theatre **x2014; shaping its history, culture and social relevance.
