In examining the materials of the farmhouse and its associated buildings and barns whether made from sarsen, thatch, timber, tile or brick, Grigson paints a vivid human picture of rural life in the preceding centuries. Grigson's study encompasses the water, trees and lichens around the dwelling, and in doing so creates a delicate weave of social history.
