Adelphi

In 1856 Liverpool, the Adelphi hotel is the city's most prestigious establishment and Alistair Monroe is the assistant manager. The arrival of psychic Clemency Martin from the USA is the start of a strange and dangerous journey for both of them. Alistair is curious about the hotel's book-keeper, Edwin Quirk, and finds a notebook in code in his office. Clemency's uncle, Moses, is a gambler who comes to the UK to pay off his debts. Quirk tells Clemency that her Uncle is in default of his agreement and will want payment in full in seven days. When Quirk is found dead, Alistair's position at the Adelphi is jeopardised. So to save his career and the life of an innocent stablehand, he takes investigations into his own hands.
