It’s London 1964, and Ralph, whose parents are divorced, bids his mother goodbye as she sets off to work in America for a year. She leaves him in the care of her Irish housekeeper Doreen and husband Tom. Ralph’s days are marked not only by his books, school, his friend Benedict and letters from his mother but also his confusion as he attempts to reason out the oddness of adults: their lying, cheating, loving and adultery. Memorable and beautifully crafted.
