Merchants of War and Peace

The main reasons for the first Opium war have been linked to the infamous opium smuggling trade, the defence of British national honour, and cultural conflicts between 'progressive' Britain and 'backward' China; however, these were not the main causes behind the war. The author argues that a group of merchants known as the 'Warlike Party' that operated in the one-port system was the major driving force.
