Christoph Menke is a third-generation Frankfurt School theorist, and widely acknowledged as one of the most interesting philosophers in Germany today. His lead essay focuses on the fundamental question for legal and political philosophy: the relationship between law and violence. The first part of the essay shows why and in what precise sense the law is irreducibly violent; the second part establishes the possibility of the law becoming self-reflectively aware of its own violence. The volume contains responses by Marï¿½a del Rosario Acosta Lï¿½pez, Daniel Loick, Alessandro Ferrara, Ben Morgan, Andreas Fischer-Lescano and Alexander Garcï¿½a Dï¿½ttmann. It concludes with Menke's reply to his critics.

A selection of 26 images from Segregation Story first appeared in the September 24, 1956 issue of Life magazine as part of the photo-essay "The Restraints: Open and Hidden." Although some of these were exhibited during his lifetime, the bulk of Parks' assignment was thought lost. In 2011, five years after Parks' death, The Gordon Parks Foundation discovered more than 70 color transparencies from the series. Revising the original book published by Steidl in 2014, this expanded edition is the most comprehensive publication of this pivotal body of work to date. In the summer following the 1955 bus boycott in Montgomery, Life magazine sent Gordon Parks to Alabama to document the daily realities of African Americans living under Jim Crow laws that enforced racial segregation. Over the course of several weeks in summer 1956, he photographed an extended African-American family, the Causeys, at home and work in the rural South. The resulting color photographs are among Parks' most powerful and groundbreaking images, and have since become iconic representations of the conditions that led to the civil rights movement. Among them is one of Joanne Thornton Wilson and her niece, Shirley Anne Kirksey, standing in front of a theater in Mobile, Alabama-a celebrated image that became, in Parks' words, a forceful "weapon of choice" in the struggle against racism and segregation. For a good two hundred years the Tower Room on the piano nobile of the Dresden Residence served as a unique showroom for the electoral-royal porcelain collection. Here, alongside vases from China and Japan, King August III presented the finest products of his manufactory at Meissen, on gilded consoles against red-lacquered wall panels. In the bombing of Dresden in February 1945 the royal palace was almost entirely consumed by fire; as for the porcelain pieces, despite having been evacuated in 1943, the majority of them fell prey to plundering and destruction. Now that the porcelain cabinet has been reconstructed, some of the extant pieces - notably the spectacular 'Elements' garniture modelled by Johann Joachim Kaendler and two 'Dragoons' vases - can be displayed again. Additionally, ten silver gueridons serve as a reminder of the room's earlier function as a 'Silver Buffet'. This book traces the history of the cabinet from its origins in the 1730s to its destruction in 1945. It includes a comprehensive Catalogue section in which the losses from the Tower Room's holdings are presented on the basis of the documentation of the porcelain collection undertaken in 1941.

The RF 1475-1556 Louvre Album is universally regarded as a corpus of drawings that was executed by the Venetian painter Jacopo Bellini. The album's trajectory prior to coming into the possession of the Bellini family is elucidated in the present book. Based on Norberto Gramaccini's interpretation, it was the Paduan painter Francesco Squarcione who was the mastermind and financier behind the drawings. The preparatory work had actually been delegated to his most gifted pupils, among them Andrea Mantegna, Jacopo Bellini´s future son-in-law. The drawing's topics -anatomy, perspective, archeology, mythology, contemporary chronicles, and zoology -were part of the teaching program of an art academy established by Squarcione in the 1440s, famous in its day, which provided crucial impulses for the training of artists in the modern era.
