Most people are sound – and being sound pays off. But we often forget the power and importance of being sound to others and we can also be particularly hard on ourselves.

At times we even find it hard to accept a sincere and friendly compliment from those around us. “Fiona, I really like that top you are wearing, you’re gorgeous”, “What this auld yolk? 15 euro in Penney’s, sure tis grand. ” So, what is the alternative? How about practicing self-compassion as well as being sound to those around you? This doesn’t mean you have to walk around high-fiving yourself every five minutes or attempting to shift a mirror every time you pass one – but the more compassion we can show for ourselves the more empathy we can show to others.

And guess what? Studies in psychology and neuroscience are confirming that there’s real science to support how being sound to others and to ourselves has a huge positive impact on our mind and bodies.

The Little Book of Sound was created during the #SoundEffect Campaign - an online campaign which engaged with millions of people across Ireland and around the world – simply asking them to share acts of soundness, however small. The campaign ran up to and during the Electric Picnic - where a series of conversations on being sound and mental wellness were hosted with guests including Jack Reynor, Niall “Bressie” Breslin, Kathy Sheridan, Roisín Ingle, Miriam O’Callaghan and Michael Harding.
