Flawed pastor Samuel and the resolutely irreligious Anna collide on a Belfast street, their surrender to temptation eventually leading to a life-changing fallout. While a fresh start brings some peace, the past is never far away. I enjoyed The First Day for many reasons: the characters, the storyline, and the tension that at times made me hold my breath with anticipation. Above all, the writing held me throughout, and I occasionally found myself stopping to re-read a carefully crafted paragraph.
